CLTC vs WLTP vs real range

Why the numbers differ and how to read them when comparing models.

The short answer

CLTC, WLTP, NEDC, and EPA are not interchangeable range numbers. If two cars use different standards, the larger number may simply come from a more optimistic test cycle.

For most buyers, WLTP is a better comparison baseline than CLTC or NEDC, while real-world range still depends on speed, temperature, tyres, driving style, and air-conditioning use.

What the data shows

CLTC numbers often look higher because the cycle is more favorable to urban efficiency. NEDC is an older cycle and can also be optimistic. WLTP is more demanding and commonly used in Europe and many export materials. EPA is usually stricter but not available for most non-US models.

Chinese brands sometimes publish different range figures for the same model across markets. That can be legitimate when battery size, wheel size, drivetrain, testing standard, or trim changes.

A fair comparison should keep the standard consistent. If only CLTC is available, treat it as a best-case lab number and leave margin for real driving.

What to check before you buy

  • Identify the standard printed next to the range figure before comparing models.
  • Compare trims with the same wheel size and drivetrain where possible.
  • Look for owner data from your climate and speed profile, especially for highway-heavy use.
  • Check DC charging speed and charging curve, because a slightly shorter-range EV can be easier to live with if it charges faster and more predictably.

Market differences

GCC highway speeds and summer cooling load can reduce practical range, so use conservative buffers.

Singapore city use may produce more efficient daily range, but charging access and COE economics may matter more than maximum range.

Australia buyers should plan around intercity charging gaps and towing or roof-rack use when relevant.
